Crafting the Call -- Game 6 in 1993
In Episode 8, we break down how Tom Cheek, Harry Kalas, Vin Scully and Sean McDonough/Tim McCarver described the ending of the 1993 World Series
Crafting the Call is a YouTube series that I developed along with Jesse Goldberg-Strassler. Each week, we examine different aspects of baseball play-by-play announcing, offering our perspective as working professionals for fans, and advice for fellow broadcasters.
Comparing and contrasting how different broadcasters describe the same play is one of the favorite ways of re-living a moment and learning how to become better at my job.
For Episode 8 of Crafting the Call, Jesse Goldberg-Strassler and I look back on the famous ending from Game Six of the 1993 World Series. The Toronto Blue Jays are the defending champions and lead 3-2 in the best-of-7, but the Philadelphia Phillies take a lead into the ninth inning, looking to force Game Seven.
We listen to the following calls:
Tom Cheek on Blue Jays Radio
Harry Kalas on Phillies Radio
Vin Scully on CBS Sports National Radio
Sean McDonough and Tim McCarver on CBS Television
We also start by listening to the first walkoff home run to end a World Series, hit Bill Mazeroski in 1960 and described by Chuck Thompson.
