Crafting the Call -- Eck vs Gibby
In Episode 3, we listen to how Vin Scully, Jack Buck, Don Drysdale and Bill King described the legendary home run
Crafting the Call is a YouTube series that I developed along with Jesse Goldberg-Strassler. Each week, we examine different aspects of baseball play-by-play announcing, offering our perspective as working professionals for fans, and advice for fellow broadcasters.
The 1988 World Series is the most disappointing sporting event of my life.
It was simply unfathomable to me that the Los Angeles Dodgers had any chance of beating my beloved mighty Oakland Athletics.
But we know what happened: Kirk Gibson’s miraculous homer ended Game One, Orel Hershiser’s dominance continued in Game Two, Mark McGwire’s heroics salvaged Game Three for the A’s, but the bats stayed silent in the Jay Howell revenge Game Four, and Hershiser finished them off in Game Five.
I’ve tried to channel my childhood disappointment by writing a book about the 1988 Dodgers. Yes, it’s still available! Here’s a link.
Now, in Episode 3 of my new “Crafting the Call” series on YouTube with Jesse Goldberg-Strassler, we’re looking at the four play-by-play voices on the microphone for the iconic ending to Game One.
No doubt, you’ve heard Vin Scully on NBC’s national TV broadcast.
Pretty sure you’ve heard Jack Buck on CBS’s national Radio broadcast.
But have you heard Don Drysdale’s call on Dodgers Radio?
Or how about Bill King’s description on A’s Radio?
Take a look and listen at how four legends describe a legendary moment.
